SSP, SMP and Employee Rates to Rise

The standard rate of statutory maternity, paternity and adoption pay will increase from £124.88 to £128.73 per week from 3rd April 2011. SSP will rise to £81.60. Employee NI will rise by 1% and the threshold for NI contributions will increase too. Contact us for more details.
Flexible Working Rights Extended

The right to flexible working will be extended to all employees with children under 18 in April 2011. The right currently extends only to employees with children under 5, or with disabled children. Additional guidance on the Equality Act 2010 expected in April this year

Additional guidance on how the Equality Act will apply the definition of disability is expected. The new Equality Act 2010 meant that established definitions of what constitutes a disability under the old Disability Discrimination Act became defunct. The maximum weekly wage for the purposes of calculating a statutory redundancy payment (and tribunal) for unfair dismissal increases from £380 to £400. The maximum unfair dismissal compensatory award at tribunal rises from £65,300 to £68,400
Additional Paternity Leave entitlement to Commence April 2011

The right for fathers and civil partners to take Additional Paternity Leave of 26 weeks will commence from April 2011. This means that fathers and partners of those giving birth can share maternity allowances for leave and pay if the mother returns to work. October 2011: Agency workers to receive equal rights.

Following the EUs Agency Workers Directive, Agency workers in the UK will receive equal rights to permanent workers from October 2011. If a temporary worker temps with you for more than 12 weeks you will need to match their pay and basic employment conditions to that of a comparable permanent worker. The latest National Statistics see earnings grow 2% to September 2010. With inflation (RPI) at 4.5%, this points to a drop in the standard of living for most people, especially those without mortgages.
